Master Cheng's New Methods of Taichi Ch'uan Self-Cultivation

Great Reference Material, January 30, 2009

This is the book my teacher used for reference. It is a great little book which I still use it every once in a while to refresh my memory. It has something for both the advanced student, and a complete beginner.

It gives a clear overall definition of the postures and stances. However, some of the transitions are not clearly defined, and are therefore hard to follow for someone unfamiliar with this particular form. Weight distribution and foot placement diagrams are a big help when it comes to shifting the body from posture to posture. This is a big plus, since Cheng M’an Ching placed more emphasis on straight back and equilibrium.

If you don't have access to an instructor and want to learn the CMC form, this is the book I would recommend.

Master Cheng's Thirteen Chapters on Tai Chi Ch Uan

Master Cheng's Thirteen Chapters on Tai Chi Ch'uan

M'an Ching, Cheng
Direct Words of a Master, November 12, 2008

In this book, Professor Cheng presents a compendium of his experiences and views of Taiji Quan, along with some in-door Yang family teachings, plus commentary elaborating on the Thirteen Postures, their symbolism and correlation to the five elements, and the Taiji Classics.

Qi Gong techniques and visualizations are listed, to help the practitioner progress in cultivation. The progress of Qi cultivation is described, along with advice on what to focus on, and how to apply body movement successfully.

Not a book for the beginner, as you have to be quite a bit familiar with the Neidan aspects of Taiji Quan to reap the full benefits.

Overall, a wonderful text. I find myself going back and re-reading from time to time.
